A group dental insurance plan is a great way for employers to provide affordable dental care for their employees. Members enrolled in a company-sponsored group plan pay a monthly premium to take advantage of specified dental benefits. Like group health plans, group dental plans are varied and can be customized for your business. Adjust the size of the dental provider network, deductible amount, preventive care coverage or copays to meet your needs. Dental plans can extend well beyond preventive care to include orthodontics and oral surgery.
Wondering what type of group dental insurance plan makes sense for your company or organization? There are a handful of different plan types to consider, which gives employers a reasonable amount of flexibility. Additionally, small businesses may have unique circumstances to consider when deciding what group dental plan to purchase. Regardless how many employees you have, contact one of our agents to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of different plan types.
Dental Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO) – DPPOs are group dental insurance plans with a designated provider network, but employees aren’t required to stay in the network. However, in-network visits entitle employees to plan benefits like coinsurance, free cleanings and lower out-of-pocket costs for more significant procedures like fillings, root canals and wisdom teeth removal. DPPOs offer more freedom for members, but that flexibility may be reflected in higher premiums.
Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO) – DHMOs are an example of a group dental plan that’s more restrictive but also more affordable on an individual level. Under a DHMO, employees must select a dentist or dental facility as their primary care provider at the time of enrollment. Through these “prepaid,” no-deductible plans, providers receive a monthly rate and then provide services to group members at a reduced cost. DHMO premiums are typically lower, but out-of-network procedures, if needed, aren’t covered.
Rounding out your employee benefits package with a group dental insurance plan can make your company a more desirable place to work. Group dental plans offer better benefits, rates and access than most traditional individual plans, and like group health insurance, employee premiums can be withheld pre-tax through a Section 125 Premium-Only Plan (POP).
Surveys have consistently shown high levels of employee participation in group dental plans. And when job hunting, individuals often seek out employers with both health and dental insurance plans. Offering a dental plan is part of remaining competitive—it’s also part of embracing a culture of wellness.
Most dental plans cover 100% of preventive care, which encourages employees to get regular cleanings and X-rays to avoid more serious dental problems down the line. Access to high-quality dental care can also help boost employee confidence and reinforce healthy choices.
